Don’t wait. It sounds overwhelming, but here are some easy ways to do it.

Imagine that all your belongings are destroyed in a house fire. Thankfully, you have insurance. But to file a claim and get reimbursed, you have to make a list of everything you lost.

How many of your belongings would you be able to remember?

I tried it on a smaller scale, listing everything I could think of in my home office from memory. I came up with 51 items. Not bad, I thought — but once I returned to the room, I discovered another 25 things that I’d missed.

“All the stuff that we collect as people over the years … adds up to hundreds of thousands of dollars oftentimes. And to remember all those little things is nearly impossible,” says Steve Severaid, president of The Greenspan Co./Adjusters International, a public adjusting firm serving California, Nevada and Arizona. Public insurance adjusters help policyholders negotiate fair insurance claims.

To ensure your claim payout doesn’t fall short, consider creating a survey of your belongings, often called a home inventory.

The benefits of a home inventory

In the aftermath of a disaster, you’ll likely be grieving the loss of your home, looking for a temporary place to live and struggling to figure out what’s next. Aside from helping you get full reimbursement for your possessions, having a home inventory can lighten your burden during a stressful time.

“Is it hard to [make an inventory] now? Yeah,” says Katherine Navarro Wong, a State Farm agency owner in Santa Rosa, California. “But after you’ve lost everything, it’s really hard.”

Because you’ve already done most of the work, having a home inventory in place makes it easier and quicker to file your claim, Wong says. “You’ll get your money faster.”

Putting together your inventory can also help you make sure you have enough insurance coverage. You might not realize just how much your stuff is worth until you start documenting it all, Wong says. Then, if you discover that your

How to create a home inventory

Listing every one of your possessions may seem like a daunting task, but there are ways to make it more manageable.

“One of the … fastest, simplest ways to do this is to take 15 or 20 minutes with a video camera or your iPhone,” Severaid says. He recommends walking through each room and narrating as you go, zooming in on the labels of high-value items. Don’t forget to pull out dresser drawers and open cabinet doors to show what’s inside.

Aside from being quicker to produce than a written record, a video also offers a way for your insurance company to see the quality of your items, Severaid says.

Taking photos instead of video is another option. For example, the ItemEyes app allows you to upload images and information about each item, such as the serial number, date of purchase, warranty, appraisals.

If trying to count every kitchen towel makes you want to give up altogether, “focus on the more valuable items”. This might include jewelry, artwork, musical instruments and collections, plus furniture and electronics. The items in a toolshed can also add up fast.

Whatever method you choose, make sure your home inventory is stored somewhere outside of your house, such as in the cloud or a safe deposit box at the bank. Having an inventory won’t do you any good if the computer it’s on burns up in a fire. The ItemEyes app stores your info as long as your account is active.

You can share your stored ItemEyes info with your insurance agent and/or estate attorney.

It's recommended that you update your inventory every year or two, or sooner if you’ve made major purchases or redecorated your home.

Making a claim without an inventory

If disaster strikes before you’ve gotten around to creating an inventory, you can try the following to get the most from your home insurance claim:

Ask friends and family to share photos taken at your home. Photographs are never meant to document the house, but it’s always in the background.

Check your phone (if it survived the disaster) and social media accounts for photos of the interior of your home.

Look for a list of common household items, such as the United Policyholders inventory above, to help jog your memory.

Check your order history at the online stores where you shop most often. Your email account may also have receipts for past purchases.

Home inventories might seem like the domain of the fabulously wealthy and obsessive collectors. Perhaps you envision a wealthy friend greedily taking stock of each and every possession, or roll your eyes at your neighbor polishing his Star Trek memorabilia. Home inventories are truly for everyone, and taking one now may be one of the best things you can do to protect your financial well-being. Taking a home inventory can be easy if you use the best home inventory app.

ItemEyes

makes the process easy. Take just a few photos and quickly tag everything–no need for complex spreadsheets and endless combing through boxes of stuff. Here’s why the time to take that inventory is now.

Everything has a story. Tell it.

Every single possession in your home has a story–the shoes you bought on a whim while grieving a breakup; the comforting dress you wore to your mom’s funeral; the bread box you inherited from your great grandmother. These stories matter.

           The Painted Drum

, one character memorializes every loss in her life by pinning a note to the handkerchief she took with her to the funeral. The result is a literal box full of sorrows–a treasured reminder of the joy and suffering of a human life.

You don’t have to go this far. But an inventory can help frame the story of your possessions, and your life. Your heirs will no longer see just a ring or a row of books on a shelf, but a legacy you’ve built. Your inventory can be a starting point for the stories your heirs will tell for generations.

Planning for an inheritance–or giving it away now

Speaking of heirs, have you considered who is going to get all your stuff when you die? Rather than leaving it all to one person or counting on the kids to split it up, the right home inventory app can help you designate special gifts for everyone you love. All you need is a few photos. But ItemEyes allows you to do more–tag possessions, tell stories, share the information with loved ones.

And while you’re at it, maybe you’re ready to part with Great Aunt Millie’s 100-year-old silver now. An inventory may just encourage you to give gifts to your loved ones and watch them enjoy those gifts while you’re still able to.

Floods, fires, and hurricanes might seem like things that happen only to the profoundly lucky. The reality is sobering.

, natural disasters hit roughly 1 in 10 American homes. Insurance can help you pick up the pieces if the worst happens. Most Americans do not adequately insure their property.

If you don’t already have your possessions insured, that needs to change. And even if you do, you may not have enough insurance to cover their full value. A home inventory helps you get real about how much you might lose if a fire or natural disaster struck your home.

It’s easy to forget everything you have, particularly if you’ve lived in your home for a while. An inventory encourages you to really notice your possessions. This may reduce spending, support your plans to declutter, and help you appreciate–and better care for–that which you already have.

Our possessions aren’t everything, and we can’t take them with us. Still, they help shape the story of who we are, and can even influence who we become.

How the ItemEyes App differs from other household inventory apps

ItemEyes App allows you to take a photo of an entire wall, room or group of valuable items and tag all of the items in that single photo versus having to take an individual photo of each item. As long as you have an active ItemEyes account the App will continue to securely store your encrypted data of your tagged valuables.

ItemEyes a photo-based app that allows you to safely document your VALUABLES!

Nearly everyone has some possessions they consider to be irreplaceable such as heirlooms, jewelry, memorabilia, artwork, etc. Ask yourself—besides you, does anyone know what these items are, where they're located, what they're worth or why they're treasured by you?

Most home inventory apps list everything from frying pans, blenders, crystal to golf clubs but, none highlight VALUABLES to the extent we wanted. Thus, we developed ItemEyes to clearly, safely itemize and document valuables that are not being used every day.

ItemEyes allows you to tag and document items that you consider to be “highly valuable” not only with individual photographs, but by taking a photo of an entire wall and simply tagging items in that photo. Upload close up images of serial numbers, item numbers, and artist’s signatures. Take a snapshot of a wall and tag it all—much quicker. Similar to tagging friends on social media.

            TIP:

           It’s okay if items don’t have monetary value—if they're sentimental—TAG it.

           Document One-of-a-Kind Items

You may wish to get a professional appraisal for some jewelry, artwork, antiques, memorabilia, and hard to replace valuables. Take a photo of appraisal and upload for safekeeping.

Under the description of each tagged item thoroughly document the memories or backstory of that gift, purchase or heirloom. You’ll want to pass down the item with the sentiment behind it. Ask your parents or grandparents while they're still around to share their stories.

           HOW IT WORKS

The ItemEyes App is a revolutionary, easy-to-use photo-based App that documents and securely stores all of your irreplaceable possessions in an orderly manner. It allows you to take a photo of an entire wall or a room.

If you’re not on site of some of your items, Choose From Library of photos on your cell, tag and document.

           Tag & Document

All you have to do is tag each item in the photo with a description (backstory) and other pertinent info like the location of item, price paid, place acquired, today’s value, a link to similar items found on the net, disposition at death, and upload support photos such as artist’s signature, serial and item numbers, and appraisals.

            Tip:

Use Google Images to find similar items to help determine the value and get detailed descriptions.

           Catalog

Customize how you want to catalog your valuables so they can be easily located by physical location or by groups.

Use LOCATION folders to group items by their physical locations (Living Room, Primary Bedroom, Study, Wine Cellar, etc.) or by collection (Jewelry, Handbags, Tiffany Glass, Sports Memorabilia, etc.).

            Tip:

If you have multiple homes, items at your office, or have lent out your valuables to exhibitions or galleries—photograph, tag and manage them for safe recordkeeping.

           Sharing

Once you’ve itemized everything, share an email link or texted link of any or all of your stored valuables with insurance agent, estate attorney, or family members. They won't be able to change anything—except have a descriptive record of your treasured items.

            Tip:

Valuables inventory is only useful if it's accurate and you're able to access in case of fire, theft, destructive disaster, death, or a divorce.

           Security

Your list doesn’t do you any good if it is in your house and is stolen, burned, damaged or destroyed.

Therefore, as long as you have an active ItemEyes account the App will continue to securely store your encrypted data of your tagged valuables. We recommend that you upload your data to an online file storage service like DropBox, Google Drive, or Carbonite for easy remote access 24/7.

If you like paper—You can always print out the individual tags with descriptive info for a safe deposit box, relative, close friend, insurance agent, or an estate attorney.

           ItemEyes App

is a revolutionary, easy-to-use photo-based App that documents and securely stores all your irreplaceable possessions in an orderly manner. The App allows you to take a photo of an entire wall or a room with several items, such as artwork, collectibles, or memorabilia. Just tag each item in the photo with a description and other pertinent info like the location of item, price paid, place acquired, today's value, a link to similar items found on the internet, disposition at death, and supporting photos such as artist's signature, serial and item numbers, and appraisals. Customize the information by groups in their natural habitat, so you don't have to manage individual pictures of each item.

            Tip:

Don't forget to document everything! The items you acquired from your mom, Great Aunt or Granny could possibly be more valuable than you think. Imagine having the rare necklace your uncle purchased while stationed in Egypt or your treasured signed Muhammad Ali photo ending up in a yard sale because nobody knew about its history and true worth.

           3. Document One-of-a-Kind Items

Get a professional appraisal for jewelry, artwork, antiques, memorabilia, and other one-of-a-kind or hard to replace valuables. Take a photo of the appraisal and upload it to that specific item in the App. Be sure to thoroughly document the memories or backstory of gifts, heirlooms, and other sentimental items that you'll want to pass down to your family, so they'll know what's worth keeping and why it was so special to you.

            Tip:

Be sure to include serial numbers, item numbers, and a photo of the artist's signature if applicable. Once you've itemized everything on the App, share an email link or texted link of any or all your valuables with insurance agent, estate attorney, or family members. They will not be able to change anything on the secured ItemEyes App but will have a descriptive record of your treasured items for safe keeping.

Friends Suffering From Pandemic Boredom Create New App to “ItemEyes” Your Valuables. ItemEyes is a simple photo-based app that allows you to take a photo of a wall with several items, such as artwork or collectibles, tag each item in the photo with a description and other pertinent information. You'll be able to track and manage your valuables for insurance, disposition upon death, and/or other tracking purposes.

Friends Create An App During Covid19 Lockdown

App. The friends, Ann Rose (Belleair Beach), Terry Colbert, and Yvonne Morris (Belleair Bluffs) became a “Tri-Pod” during the pandemic by socializing in person only with each other. After spending several months sorting and organizing their own household possessions, collectively they realized there had to be an easier way. Being seasoned business professionals and entrepreneurs — they decided it was time to do something productive to compensate for the isolation. So they began to develop an App that would make it easier for anyone to catalog, document and manage all of their valuables and keepsakes.

After downloading and testing out various apps, the trio wanted to create an app using the concept of “tagging” individual items in a single photo as opposed to taking a bunch of photos. Similar to social media where you can tag friends in a group of photos. This would simplify the process of documenting dozens of collectibles that were possibly inherited, gifted and/or purchased. With ItemEyes, you simply take a photo of a wall or a group of items in a room, tag the items in that single photo, title and describe each item. Under the description section, go into detail — about the size, what it’s made of, how you acquired it, what it means to you. In addition to the description, enter its physical location, date you acquired, whom or where you acquired, what you paid, estimated current value, and what you’d like to do with the item upon death.

Your entire catalog of itemized valuables can be sent to your estate attorney, insurance agent, financial advisor, or Trustee to document your possessions for legal, insurance, and/or other business purposes. A professional version is in the works for antique sellers and pawn shops — where they’ll be able to promote items in their inventory by posting tagged photos for sale online. The uses of this creative approach to item documentation are endless.

The feedback has been positive and unanimously enthusiastic. “It helps me organize and know the value of my stuff”, said Paul Holly of Atlanta. Jane Anthony says, “ It’s easy to use. It lets me the user decide what and where and how to set up my categories. Not locked into ones the app pre decided.” For those concerned about security, the ItemEyes App is

ItemEyes is a simple photo-based App. Unlike other inventory and organizational Apps where you have to take individual pictures of each item, ItemEyes allows you to take pictures of rooms or groupings in rooms and tag individual items in a single photo. When you tap on a single item in the photo, a dialog box opens up where you enter Title, Description, Location of Item, Date Acquired, Place Acquired, Purchase Price, Current Value, Disposition, and a supporting URL (link to a website referencing the item). Each picture can have up to about 15 tagged items.

This is far more reliable and less burdensome than managing hundreds of photos, spreadsheets, handwritten notes and/or sticky notes on individual items. ItemEyes simplifies the process of documenting your collectibles, inherited items, and valuable purchased items.

Photos are arranged in Catalogs by a category like "location" or "collection". Example locations would be a Great Room, Primary Bedroom, Dining Room, Beach House, or City Home. Collection would be—Wine, Antique Clocks, Jewelry, etc.

You can easily share and forward a photo with a single tag or multiple tags to anyone via eMail or Text, or post on websites or social media.

The entire Catalog of items can be sent to a lawyer, insurance agent, financial advisor, or Trustee to document the possessions for legal, insurance, and/or other personal or business purposes. But only you will be able to edit information about the items. Information on item's value and location is highly secured and cannot be obtained by unscrupulous individuals.

The best part — YOU can start using the app right away! It’s a free download for 14 days, so what are you waiting for?
